Veteran actor Sunil Thapa passes away on Friday morning at the age of 68. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Norvic Hospital, Thapathali, Kathmandu, after his health suddenly worsened. According to hospital authorities, Thapa was brought to the facility in an unconscious condition.

Rajendra Bahadur Singh, chairperson of Norvic Hospital, confirmed that an ECG conducted at 7:44 am declared him dead. Doctors have suspected cardiac arrest as the primary cause of death. Hospital sources stated that a formal announcement would be made after the arrival of his family members from Mumbai.

Sunil Thapa was regarded as one of the most influential figures in Nepali cinema, with a career spanning several decades. He worked in over 300 Nepali films and was especially celebrated for his powerful villainous roles. Before stepping into films, Thapa began his professional journey as a model in Mumbai during the mid-1970s. He worked with several leading fabric brands and also showcased his athletic side by playing professional football for clubs in Bombay.

In his early years, he even worked as a photojournalist for JS Magazine (Junior Statesman) and notably covered the Bhutan Coronation in 1974, highlighting his diverse talents beyond cinema.

Recognition in Indian Cinema

Sunil Thapa also made a mark in Indian cinema, debuting in Bollywood with Ek Duuje Ke Liye. Over the years, he appeared in multiple Hindi, Tamil, and Bhojpuri films. He gained wider recognition for his supporting role in Mary Kom, which earned him a Filmfare Award nomination, further cementing his reputation as a versatile performer.
