Wonder Man Review : Stylish, Flawed, Surprisingly Entertaining Marvel

Wonder Man Review : As we return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you may feel fatigue creeping in. No need for alarm; everything will be alright! Even though Wonder Man (by my calculations) marks about 30th series produced by Marvel Television – from WandaVision and She-Hulk – it still manages to remain an enjoyable little treat.

Not too big in comparison with its peers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Not only are its eight episodes only approximately 30 minutes each but they forgo spectacle in favor of storytelling – an unconventional approach but one which may prove successful.

Wonder Man Review: Turns Hollywood Failure Into Superhero Drama

Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II – who plays DC Comics character Black Manta in Aquaman films) has spent years trying to break through as an actor in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, his inability to stop overthinking roles makes him an absolute nightmare on set, leading him to being fired even when he does land one.

But having always loved Wonder Man, when the opportunity aroses to audition for one featuring him he leapt at it eagerly; soon thereafter he befriends Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley who plays Trevor in various MCU films – washed out actor hired by Iron Man 3 villain Tony Starks who hired Trevor as “The Mandarin”, leader of Ten Ring terrorist leaders of Ten Ring terrorist leaders). There he met Trevor Slattery who helped Simon make himself at audition; where they both found great friendship despite overthinking each others roles when casting calls come.

Wonder Man Blends Hollywood Fear With Superhero Conspiracy

Be wary when making friends with an actor like Trevor; he represents the Department of Damage Control, an obscure government organisation dedicated to safeguarding citizens against supernatural threats with an elaborate prison complex designed for detainees before its budget gets cut. And so the DODC has been monitoring Simon since he was 13 and miraculously survived a house fire which should have killed him.

We believe his choice to play Wonder Man comes not solely from fond childhood memories of watching shonky films with his father as an inspiration; there appears to be other factors as well. Simon remains ignorant of the DODC, concealing his powers for fear that they might be prohibited in Hollywood following an on-set incident (depicted with great skill in an episode halfway through) which threatens their employment.

Wonder Man Marvel Series Showcases Mentorship And Performance

But the real crux of the piece lies not in superheroics repressed or otherwise; rather it lies in two areas. One area involves Trevor as mentor: through advice like Olivier gave to Dustin Hoffman during Marathon Man (“Dear boy – why don’t you just try acting?”), he shows younger men how to get past themselves and improve both their careers and lives in general. He helps these people overcome any internal obstacles to success and grow themselves as individuals – an approach which ultimately benefits society overall.

Wonder Man Offers MCU Acting Lessons And Insight

Second, we receive a meditation on the film industry and multiple masterclasses on acting techniques. I never imagined writing such words about MCU intellectual property! Yet it has been such an enjoyable journey! Follow Simon as he prepares audition tapes, talks about character choices and finds new ways to tell stories; finally watching as Abdul-Mateen puts everything together.

And we see Trevor/Kingsley offer advice and options to the actor about alternative techniques; discuss his options; demonstrate what having a supportive line reader off camera can bring; and demonstrate the profound effect that having been immersed in both stage and screen performance has made on him. At one point, actor-characters sit and exchange some of their favourite speeches – from Shakespeare to Amadeus’ Salieri – until all boundaries between them and us begin to blur – it is an astonishing demonstration of art’s power!

Wonder Man Marvel Show Surprises With Tender Moments

Wonder Man may disappoint those expecting superhero action-adventures, as there are only brief instances of Simon’s powers building and occasionally being unleashed – though those looking for more will find this show rewarding in other areas such as its portrayal of lead relationships as well as interrogating effects of art corruption – both of which make for excellent viewing! Forgive my bias but this show really is rather clever, tender, and altogether incredible.
